BBS- Human Sexuality Across a Lifespan for Youth Care Providers (2-Day) – 10 CAMFT/BRN CE Credits

Training Summary:

Clients often bring up concerns about their sexuality, but discussing this topic can be challenging for both the therapist and the client. This curriculum offers a comprehensive overview of various aspects of sexuality, including historical perspectives, physical elements, and common clinical issues faced by both men and women. Referencing Human Sexuality in a Changing World by Fisher & Byrne (2015), the course explores the stages of human sexuality over the lifespan and how cultural mindset changes around sexuality impact this. This content is important in supporting training attendees to better understand how the lens through which they see their own sexuality impacts the treatment they provide their clients. This course covers the definition of sexual disorders and STI’s from both psychosocial and diagnostic viewpoints, as well as issues related to childhood sexual abuse, consent, and rape. Additionally, the course addresses how societal ideas about sexual orientation and gender constructs impact personal identity and relationships. Further, it explores topics related to alternative forms of sex and sexual identity, including issues concerning the LGBT community and non-monogamous relationships.

Training Objectives:

By the end of the training, participants will be able to...

·       Clearly define and explain how sexuality develops from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood, including key milestones and changes, as demonstrated in group discussion.

·       Identify and describe the physiological and psychological changes that occur during puberty and their relation to sexual development, as measured by a short-answer self-assessment.

·       Explain how sexuality is influenced by factors such as gender, culture, media, and socialization, demonstrated through a small group breakout room discussion.

·       Identify, assess, diagnose, and propose treatment options for common clinical sexual issues, as demonstrated through a case study analysis.

·       Identify common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and understand effective ways to support clients who are navigating a positive STI diagnosis, demonstrated through a multiple-choice test or role-playing exercise.

·       Describe and apply ethical principles related to sexual health counseling, demonstrating a thorough understanding of client confidentiality, consent, and professional boundaries, in a role-playing scenario.

Trainer Bio:

Skye Nashelsky is a licensed marriage and family therapist located in San Francisco. His background is in Women's and Gender studies, and most of his work has been serving foster children, youth and caregivers, as well as LGBTQIA and trans-identified individuals. Skye has worked with foster and adoptive youth, caregivers and families for over a decade. His goal is working to increase local education, empowerment, and advocacy on a personal and professional level. In his private practice, he supports clients who are working through trauma, anxiety, and depression, as well as healing from trauma. Skye has been training for over 15 years and covers a range of topics, including sexual health and reproductive rights, harm reduction and LGBTQIA inclusivity. Skye’s approach is strength-based, affirming, social justice-centered, and goal oriented. Skye's practice informs deep personal healing, self-love, self-care and authenticity, as well as boundary-setting and relational work. Skye brings knowledge in lifespan development and human sexuality through the lens of working as a therapist for over 12 years, training and self-study on the topic.

Trainees will leave this course with greater familiarity with sexuality throughout the human lifespan, de-stigmatizing/pathologizing the range of human sexuality, as well as understanding how culture and sexuality contribute to client’s sexual expression, leading to improved outcomes for their clients.

IMPORTANT

You must work with dependent (foster & probation) youth in Alameda, Contra Costa, or Solano County in order to attend our trainings. Trainings are free for those eligible to attend. 

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

Course meets the qualifications for 10 continuing education credits for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Seneca Family of Agencies is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs.
