BBS- Suicide Risk Assessment and Intervention
(2-Day) – 6 CAMFT & BRN CE Credits
Training
Summary: During this
training, participants will review their roles in assessing and intervening to
prevent suicide as defined by professional organizational ethics and legal
statutes while in counseling or therapy sessions. They will also view current Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) statistics identifying demographic trends of suicide
completion and exploring the most lethal methods of suicide attempts.
Participants will learn to identify risk and protective factors for suicide as
defined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA). They will also be introduced to Thomas Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory
of Suicide (2009) and Joyce Chu’s Cultural Theory and Model of Suicide for
Youth (Chu et al., 2022) to better understand drivers for suicide. Participants will be introduced to the Ask
Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) screening tool and Assessment Guide
(Aguinaldo et al., 2021) as a best practice for opening new clients and for
assessing suicide risk when there is a positive screening and when there is
suspicion of suicidality with current clients. Participants will be introduced
to the CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means) approach (Frank &
Ciocca, 2009) and the Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention for safety
planning around suicide risk. Participants will also be introduced to
evidence-based practices for managing suicidality including Cognitive Behavior
Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A).
Participants will be provided handouts, a PowerPoint, video content, and
experiential exercises.
Measurable
Learning Objectives:
Day One
- Describe 3 demographics of
those disproportionately at risk for completing suicide.
- Identify 2 methods commonly used in suicide
attempts.
- Identify 2 drivers for suicide as described
in Thomas Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.
- List 5 risk factors for suicide and 3 protective
factors.
Day Two
- List 2 requirements for safety plans.
- List 2 questions included in an ASQ
screening.
- Identify 2 items to include
in documentation on suicide assessment.
- Describe what “withheld intent” is and why it is
important to consider
Trainer
Bio: Angie Jenkins
is a licensed Clinical social worker who has worked at Seneca Family of
Agencies for eight years. Angie is currently supporting youth
and families as the Program Supervisor for a Transitional age youth full
service partnership, a commercially sexually exploited
children’s full service partnership and a commercially sexually
exploited children’s child welfare teaming program, and has worked within
therapeutic behavioral services, wrap around and residential placement settings
over the past 15 years. As a certified Suicide Prevention Trainer
since 2020 Angie continues to support staff in addressing our client
and family needs, and has created trainings on the
topic for the resource family approval process. Staff can expect to
develop knowledge of how to support in suicide prevention for clients in
differing stages of youth from childhood-young adulthood, and how to safety
plan with youth who do not reside in family units and therefore
present with additional risk factors. Clinicians will be able to
apply this knowledge when working with emerging adult clients, and older
adolescents.
IMPORTANT
You must work with
dependent (foster & probation) youth in Alameda, Amador, Contra Costa,
Solano, or Monterey County in order to attend our trainings. Trainings are free
for those eligible to attend.
CONTINUING
EDUCATION CREDITS
Course meets the
qualifications for 6 continuing education credits for LMFTs, LCSWs,
LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Seneca Family of Agencies is approved by the California Association of Marriage
and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs,
and/or LEPs. Seneca Family of Agencies maintains responsibility for this
