BBS-The Impact
of Domestic Violence on Children, Families & the Community (2-Day)- 15
CAMFT & RN CE Credits
This course will provide an overview and introduction (or
refresher) on the impact of domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner
violence (IPV) on families and children for both new and experienced
clinicians. DV/IPV work truly starts where the client is; the work touches on
multiple theories from the work of Dr. Bruce Perry to Harm Reduction to
Attachment theory to CBT and EMDR. This training provides statistical
information and current and past research to illustrate just how many people in
the U.S are impacted daily by DV. This training utilizes slides, videos,
vignettes, discussion of anonymized cases, and small and large group
discussions to bring this issue to life. The training helps participants see
just how widespread this problem has been historically, how it impacts people
of all gender identities, ages and ethnicities, and what they can do to assist
clients at any Stage of Change in their process.
Domestic violence is one of the top health concerns in our
country today; many young people and adults involved in the mental health,
child welfare, substance use disorder treatment and juvenile justice systems
have been exposed to its often traumatic effects, which can be lifelong.
Domestic Violence (DV) is having a devastating impact on children, families,
and our communities. Learn how to best recognize symptoms and behaviors related
to Domestic Violence and how to do your best evidence-based interventions,
assessments, reports, referrals, and safety planning with children, families,
and adults affected by DV. The course will cover: 1) The legal and child
protection systems strengths and flaws re: protection of victims, 2) How DV/IPV
affects children and adults and how you can help them recover, 3) Which
populations are at greatest risk, 3) Which evidence-based therapies and
engagement techniques have the best results with children and adults, and
finally, how and why to do DV/IPV psychoeducation with ALL of your clients to
help them break generational cycles of violence and emotional abuse in their
communities.

Presented By: Jennifer Baity LCSW, LAADC
Jennifer has over 30 years of clinical
experience in working with children, families, and adults who have been
affected by Domestic Violence (DV) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). She
began this work at Seneca Center as a clinician/supervisor where she worked
with children in therapeutic foster care who often had significant trauma as a
result of this issue. She also worked at Edgewood Center for Children. She then
worked at the Mental Rehabilitation Center in San Francisco with clients from a
wide range of cultural, racial and economic backgrounds and supervised
clinicians to assist clients, many of whom struggled with growing up in
households where there was DV and who were still experiencing the effects this trauma
as adults in the mental health system with their traumas unaddressed or
under-addressed.
Jennifer
currently is in private practice where she sees individual clients impacted by
DV and IPV of all gender identities, ethnicities, cultures, and economic statuses.
She provides EMDR, CBT, and/or Rogerian therapy as well as psychoeducation for
clients with past DV-related trauma or relationships where they may be
currently experiencing these issues. Additionally, Jennifer continues to
support and train all types of providers, including other clinicians, case
managers, and residential staff, to best support people in our system of care
who have been impacted by these issues.
