Class Description:
Training Summary:

Microaggressions are defined as “hidden messages” that “target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership” (Sue, 2010). This training invites participants to define, identify, and discuss microaggressions and recognize how they can impact the overall well-being of people who experience them. As youth care providers, it is crucial for these “hidden messages” to be recognized in order to interrupt the negative impact they have on human beings’ emotions, minds, and bodies, and engage in culturally-sensitive and emotionally safe practices. Participants will learn how to use self-awareness and supportive strategies through the process of identifying and interrupting microaggressions in their work with youth and families at individual and systemic levels.

Class Objectives:

- be able to identify and define microaggressions and how they impact others on various
levels (physiologically, relationally, systemically) who experience them;
- be able to distinguish the impact of microaggressions versus the intent of those displaying
them
- obtain and practice strategies on addressing, responding to and interrupting
microaggressions as a target or as a witness to them, with a focus on professional
relationships with youth and families.

How can participants utilize their new skills and knowledge after the training to reinforce their
learning?

- Participants will be able to identify when and how the type of microaggression is occurring
in order to address and redirect the harmful language/behavior with others who are a part
of the experience.
- Participants will be able to engage in conversations with youth to help empower them to
define, address and challenge microaggressions that they may be subjected to or engaged
in.
- Participants will be able to explore experiences of microaggressions within agency
dynamics (i.e. supervisor-supervisee) while also utilizing supportive strategies to self-regulate and strengthen professional relationships.
