According to the CDC, in 2018 21% of new HIV diagnoses in the US and dependent areas were among youth. In order to help prevent HIV infection in system involved youth, providers need to understand risk factors, prevention strategies and how to teach this information to their clients. Providers need to understand the psychosocial issues and how to support HIV+ system involved youth and their families. In this class we will focus on prevention, signs and symptoms, testing, stages of infection, legal issues, social and cultural issues, preparing youth for loss of a parent from HIV, mental health issues and resources. This course meets the pre-licensure requirements for HIV/AIDS 7 hours, for individuals applying for a license with the Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Course Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. List at least 3 strategies for preventing HIV infection.
2. Identify at least 4 signs or symptoms of HIV infection.
3. Describe the 3 stages of HIV infection.
4. Explain when and where to get HIV testing.
5. Elaborate on 2 social and 2 cultural issues related to HIV infection.
6. Describe how to prepare youth for the loss of a parent to HIV.
7. Identify at least 3 mental health issues related to having or knowing someone with HIV.
8. Find and utilize HIV resources.
Transfer of Learning Goals:
1. Determine how to approach HIV and STD prevention education strategies for clients at risk.
2. Understand and utilize interventions when working with clients who are HIV positive or their family members.
3. In supervision, they will be able to review their cases for signs of HIV infection risk; discuss HIV prevention with clients at risk for STDs and HIV infection; integrate specific intervention strategies for clients at risk or experience HIV infection in themselves or a family member.
Trainer Bio:
Rachel Michaelsen, LCSW, is a clinical social worker who has worked in HMOs, public agencies, and private practice as both a mental-health provider and a supervisor for over thirty years. She has taught courses in diagnoses, clinical supervision, suicide, HIV, human sexuality, law and ethics, childhood psychopathology, time management, vicarious traumatization and energy psychology at universities, conferences, and mental-health agencies.? She has a private psychotherapy practice and is also the immediate past Chair of the Humanitarian Committee for the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology.?
You must work with dependent (foster & probation) youth in Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, or Monterey County in order to attend our trainings. Trainings are free for those eligible to attend.
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
Course meets the qualifications for 7 continuing education credits for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Seneca Family of Agencies is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs.
