Class Description:

Training Summary: Provide a couple sentences summary (content themes/training techniques, and how this training is relevant to working with children who live in out of home care)

 

For youth who have experienced attachment trauma, this trauma can be stored in the non-language part of the brain and create irrational unconscious beliefs/cognitions about oneself and impact the ability to trust others, including service providers. These beliefs can impact family life, academic professional goals, friendships, and even the connection with youth care workers. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) gently supports the client’s nervous system to digest disturbing memories that create unconscious negative cognitions in effective ways that traditional talking support techniques are often not able to. This training will provide an introduction to using EMDR with youth in order to help process trauma and improve youth outcomes.

 

Class Objectives: (what knowledge, ideas or skills will participants explore, learn, practice, etc during the training) Provide at least 3 class objectives.

 

1.       Participants will understand how EMDR works and how it can be used in work with youth

2.       Participants will consider ways in which attachment traumas may be present in their client’s nervous systems and how those may act as a barrier to support services

3.       Participants will also practice and experience the modality of resource tapping/bilateral stimulation that is the technique utilized in EMDR

 

How can participants utilize their new skills and knowledge after the training to reinforce their

learning? (provide at least 2 transfer of learning strategies)

 

·       Participants will identify youth in their case load that would best benefit from EMDR and make a plan to introduce the youth to this support strategy

·       Participants will practice tapping both with themselves and with the youth they support in order to better understand the technique
